If water just flooded part of your home, here is what matters most in the next 24 hours: stop the source, cut the power to affected areas, remove standing water as fast as possible, and start airflow. Every hour you wait, water migrates further into walls, subfloor, and insulation — and after 24 to 48 hours, mold can begin colonizing wet materials. The steps below are in order of priority. Work through them as quickly as your situation safely allows.
Step 1 — Stop the Water and Make the Area Safe
Before anything else, find the source and shut it off.
- Burst pipe or supply line: Turn off the main water shutoff valve. In most Cranberry Township homes built in the last 30 years, it’s near the front foundation wall in the basement or in a utility closet. If you can’t find it, call the Pennsylvania American Water emergency line — they can shut off service at the street.
- Appliance failure (washing machine, dishwasher, water heater): Turn off the dedicated shutoff valve behind or beneath the appliance first, then cut power to it at the breaker.
- Roof leak or window intrusion: You can’t stop rain, but you can move furniture and belongings out of the drip zone and place buckets or plastic sheeting to contain spread.
- Sewer backup: Do not touch the water with bare skin. Sewage carries pathogens. Leave the area and call a professional before attempting any cleanup.
Once the source is controlled, check whether water has reached any electrical outlets, panels, or appliances. If there is any doubt, turn off the breaker to the affected rooms before you walk through standing water. A wet floor near a live outlet is a serious electrocution risk.
Step 2 — Remove Standing Water Immediately
Standing water is the most destructive force in a water-damage event. Hardwood floors can begin to cup within hours. Drywall wicks moisture upward faster than most people expect — a half-inch of standing water can saturate the bottom 12 inches of a wall cavity by the time you go to bed.
- Use a wet/dry shop vac to pull water off hard floors. Empty it frequently — a standard 5-gallon vac fills fast.
- If you have more than an inch of standing water across a large area, a submersible pump (available at most hardware stores or tool rental shops) will move water far more quickly.
- Pull saturated throw rugs, bath mats, and area rugs outside immediately. Leaving wet textiles on a wood or tile floor dramatically slows drying and accelerates mold growth underneath.
- Lift the edges of wall-to-wall carpet and pull it back from the tack strip if you can do so without tearing it. The padding beneath carpet holds water like a sponge and almost always needs to be replaced, even when the carpet itself can be saved.
Once visible water is gone, the floor will still feel damp — that is normal. The goal of this step is eliminating pooled water, not achieving a dry surface.
Step 3 — Start Drying the Space
After standing water is removed, aggressive airflow and dehumidification are the only things that will prevent secondary damage.
- Open windows and interior doors if outdoor humidity is lower than indoor humidity (in western Pennsylvania, this is more likely in spring and fall than in July).
- Set up box fans or floor fans aimed across wet surfaces, not directly at walls — you want air movement across the floor plane.
- Run every dehumidifier you own or can borrow. A single residential dehumidifier is rarely enough for a significant event; rental equipment centers carry high-capacity units.
- Remove baseboards if you have access to a pry bar. The gap behind baseboard trim is where moisture hides longest and where mold establishes first.
If you have forced-air heat or AC, run it — but check your filter first. A wet or dirty filter circulating through a damp house can spread contamination.
What NOT to Do in the First 24 Hours
Some common instincts make the situation worse.
Don’t use a regular household vacuum on standing water. The motor is not sealed for liquid and you risk electrocution or permanent damage to the machine.
Don’t run the HVAC system if the return air ducts are in a flooded space. You can pull contaminated air — or mold spores, in a sewer backup — through the entire duct system.
Don’t assume it dried out because the surface feels dry. Moisture meters consistently show elevated readings inside wall cavities and under flooring days after the surface appears dry to the touch. Hidden moisture is what drives mold growth.
Don’t throw away damaged materials before documenting them. If you plan to file a homeowner’s insurance claim, photograph everything — wet flooring, water lines on walls, damaged furniture, the source of the leak — before you move or discard anything. Adjusters work from documentation.
Don’t paint or seal over water-stained drywall until the underlying framing and insulation are confirmed dry. Trapping moisture behind a sealed surface is one of the most reliable ways to grow a mold problem inside your wall.
When to Call a Water Damage Professional
DIY drying is realistic for small, contained events — a toilet overflow on a tile floor, a minor appliance leak caught within an hour. It becomes inadequate quickly in these situations:
- The water source was a sewer line, toilet backup, or any gray/black water. Contaminated water requires personal protective equipment, antimicrobial treatment, and often controlled demolition of affected materials. This is not a shop-vac job.
- Water reached wall cavities, subfloor, or insulation. Once moisture is inside a wall system, consumer fans cannot dry it adequately. Professional equipment — desiccant dehumidifiers, injectidry wall-cavity systems, thermal imaging cameras — exists specifically for this problem.
- The affected area is larger than one room. The drying math changes significantly at scale. A professional assessment will tell you whether your equipment is sufficient or whether you’re just moving air around a wet house.
- You see or smell mold within 48 hours. Mold that appears this quickly means conditions were already favorable before the event — elevated ambient humidity, a previous undiscovered leak, or inadequate ventilation. That context matters for remediation.
- You’re filing an insurance claim. A certified water damage contractor can document moisture readings, affected square footage, and material classifications in the format insurance adjusters expect, which typically results in a more complete claim.

Professional drying typically takes three to five days with commercial equipment, longer in cold weather when building materials dry more slowly. Moisture readings should be taken at multiple points — not just the surface — before any reconstruction begins. Replacing flooring or closing up walls over materials that read even slightly elevated is a mistake that shows up as a mold problem six months later.
After structural drying is complete, reconstruction can begin: replacing drywall, reinstalling flooring, repainting. If your event was significant enough to involve an insurance claim, your adjuster will typically want a scope of work and photo documentation before authorizing repairs.
